October 28, 2008

Taking a line for a walk is a drawing lesson I used to use with some of the youngest kids. The point was the idea that a line doesn't have to be straight and that there are a great variety of types of line. They loved doing dotted lines and great big fat lines - and they felt very smart when they used words like horizontal, diagonal, and vertical!

Sometimes it's good to get back to the basics. So, I took a line for a walk today. This is the drawing from my sketchbook. This is an idea I've had for a painting for a while now, and it may eventually become a finished painting. For now though, I'm just enjoying the line and really just drawing again.

Okay, here he is all finished! I was really proud of the finished product on this one. Joe was pretty happy with it, too.

March 30, 2008
It's been forever since I have posted anything on here, but I am finally feeling creative and working again.

This is my latest painting in progress. It began as a gift to Joe and the subject here is Reggie Bush from his SC Trojan days. It's about 2' x 3' and is done in acrylic and prismacolor pencil.

This is the most recent picture I have of it, and I am pretty happy with how it is coming out so far. If you have suggestions, I would be open to them!

Did you ever notice that almost all the tricycles anyone had as a child were red?

Statue of Liberty
Mixed media on hardboard
24" x 24"

I don't know what else to say about this one. It sort of got me past this block I've been under for the last few weeks. Well, more avoidance than creatively blocked really, but it amounts to the same thing in the end - no work....

Statue of Liberty - WIP
Mixed media on hardboard
24" x 23"

I am rethinking the painting a day idea right now. I still think it's a very good idea to work everyday, but I don't know if setting the requirement on myself to complete a painting each day is beneficial to me or to my artwork. I am still thinking it over.

I started working on this a few days ago. It was sort of a request and is part of an idea that's been brewing for a while now.

Now I Know
Mixed media on paper
15" x 22"

I opened a fortune yesterday that read - "A new chapter in your life is being written." Oddly, I am starting to feel as if I am finally the one writing it!

Dreaming Green
Mixed media on paper
15" x 22"

Inspired by the same idea as Green Tricycle Dream, this is sort of about being in the dream, but being kept just outside the dream at the same time.

Green Tricycle Dream
Mixed media on paper
18" x 22"

Something a little different. I must be honest - this was not created today. I actually had a migraine all day and so I dug this out of the archives for everyone to see. Happy viewing!

Pear 3

Still the same pear! It's starting to get a little soft though, so maybe I'll have to think about doing something else!

Pear 2
Acrylic on canvas panel
8" x 10"

This was a lot of fun to do. Same pear - it's sitting on the table in my studio. I was thinking the other day about what I have liked about past work, and it has a lot to do with the loose feel and the color and the DRAWING that I work into paintings. I've been getting bored with what I've been doing and realized this was partly because it isn't what I do!

Pear
Acrylic on canvas panel
8" x 10"

This pear was waiting for me at the grocery store. The perfect pear, just begging to be made into art, sitting right there on top of the fruit stand. Of course I obliged!

Stealing Daffodils
Mixed media on canvas
10" x 14"

I know the title of this makes sense to no one but me, so a little explanation is in order. I was waxing nostalgic this afternoon as I am often wont to do, and I was thinking about a girl I knew in college.

The thing that made the final decision for me in my college decision and hers as well had been a campus visit in the spring when the place was absolutely covered with daffodils - it was the daffodils and the huge old trees all over campus that did it.

Anyway, she and I used to go out at night during the spring every year and steal daffodils for our dorm rooms. I have lost track of her, but I still think about her everythime I see a daffodil - or this color of yellow.
